The body of Major Thomas D. Howie. commander of 3/116th Infantry when he was killed on 17 July, lies in state on the rubble of the chursh of St croix in St Lo. He had promised to be the first man in his battalion to enter the town and his body was carried into St Lo on a jeep late on 18 July on the direct instructions of Maj Gen Gerhardt.
