The 1st Division preparing to sail for Normandy. The insignia of the Big Red One can be seen on almost all of the soldiers helmets, and also on their left shoulder. All these men wear the battle dress with wool trousers and jacket combat M1941 or tanker jacket. Behind these men are visible on the dock cranes which will be used for engineering hauled supplies on the beaches immediately after the assault. On the right stands a black soldier in uniform lattice, who probably belongs to the 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion or any of the support elements of the 5th Amphibious Brigade Engineer. Notice the dock panel "J" in the background of the tank. This is Portland Harbour.
