Men of the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, 214th Brigade, 43rd Wessex Division, dig slit trenches on the edge of a field near Verson during Operation Epsom. The battalion had just had its commanding officer killed in Cheux and was to lose his replacement on the summit of Hill 112 two weeks later, when Lt Col James was almost decpaitated by German machine-gun fire.
