Sharp was captured on D-Day shortly after parachuting into Normandy. He then promptly escaped and was sheltered by French civilians near Falaise until the area was reached by the advancing Allies.

The Lt Colonel was OC 27th Canadian Armoured regiment (The Sherbrooke Fusiliers), 2nd Canadian Armoured Brigade, 4th Canadian Armoured Division.
