BHC 001099 Street sign in Bayeux

Ref: BHC 001099

A road sign in Bayeux, 9 June 1944. Locations visible include Tilly-sur-Seulles, Villers Bocage, Vire and Caen.
This type of concrete road sign was called "Borne Michelin", as partly visible on top left, from the name of the sponsor who erected them all over France, many still surviving to this day.
They were part of the policy of the tire making company to promote automobile tourism by providing motorists with guide books, informative road signs and accurate road maps.
The latter were extensively used by the planning staff for Operation Overlord and were one essential element in preparing the numerous maps needed for the landings and subsequent campaign.
