BHC 0010090 Engineers building a Bailey Bridge on the Orne

Ref: BHC 001090

Royal Engineers of 3 British Infantry Division building a Bailey pontoon bridge, named 'London II', over the River Orne, Ranville, 8 June 1944.
This Class 40 bridge was over 200 feet long and was located 200 yards south of the existing Ranville swing bridge (renamed 'Euston II' then 'Horsa Bridge') visible on the left.
It took about 50 hours to construct, much longer than usual, as work was considerably delayed by being under enemy fire and the non-arrival of bridging equipment.
