BHC 001087 Sherman III Armoured Recovery vehicle

Ref: BHC 001087

The crew of a Sherman III Armoured Recovery Vehicle Mark I of 27 Armoured Brigade Workshops, Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers, checks the surroundings for potential threats before recovering an enemy PzKpfw IV Ausf.G tank, 3 July 1944.
This is actually a reconstitution prepared for the photographer, since this tank (turret number 612) had already been recovered from its dug-in hull-down position after it had been abandoned intact by its crew during the fighting for the Ch‚teau de la Londe on 27 or 28 June, during Operation MITTEN.
It is highly unlikely that an ARV crew would have undertaken such a risky operation in open ground in order to recover an enemy tank.
