An infnatryman from the US 78th Division surveys the cascading water tumbling down from the Schwammenauel Dam. German engineers had blown the valves and machinery in the dam to allow a measured but unstoppable flow of water down the Roer in order to keep its valley in a state of flood for as long as possible thus preventing the launch of the American attack across the river
