Chemical warafre branch of 83 Div 9th US Army laid about 1000 smoke pots in the levees south of Neuss Germany near the Rhine. Purpose was to draw enemy fire disclose location of enemy artillery cause confusion as to time and place of crossing of the Rhine smoke screen one of many in use over the river was set off 1400 18 March
