BHC 000592 GFM Gerd von Rundstedt

Ref: BHC 000592

GFM Gerd von Rundstedt, COmmander in Chief West, at 69 years of age was the oldest officer in the German Army. He was a survivor of the days of the Imperial Army with over 50 years' service. Von Rundstedt was a soldier through and through, always keeping himself clear of politics. His Chief of STaff in 1945, General Westphal, recognised him as being 'The most gifted commander of high rank' Certainly he was very well regarded by his contemporaries and the fact that Hitler twice fired and then brought him back, is a testimony to his ability as a commander.
