BHC 000591 GenObst Blaskowitz

Ref: BHC 000591

GenObst Johannes Blaskowitz, Commander Army Group H, was an infantryman of the old school and one of the most senior German generals. He commanded the German 8th Army in the war against Poland and was later head of the army of occupation there. It was in Poland that he became appalled at the conduct of the SS and sent a note about their conduct to Brauchitsch and Jodl. Hitler got to hear of it and the incident blighted Blaskowitz's career. He was passed over during the grand promotions of 1940, when many Generals junior to him were elevated to field marshal. He was not given another fighting command for the next four years until after the Allies landed in Normandy in 1944.
