Chalk No 12 Skytrain 42 was hit by flak which set fire to the left engine. After the paratroopers had jumped the pilot 1st Lt Robert S Stoddart ordered his crew to bail out while he kept the aircraft under control. Stoddart died onlanding and his burned out aircraft was photographed by the RAF on D+2 Sept 19 The Waco gider in the picture is from the D+1 or D+2 landings.
