Lieutenant-General Neil Ritchie, Commander British Eighth Army (1942). Ritchie was summoned from a staff appointment in Cairo to take command of Britain's most important army in the field against one of the world's best armoured leaders, even though he had never before commanded anything larger than a battalion in action and had no experience of tank warfare.
