Lieutenant General William 'Strafer' Gott, Commander XIII Corps (left) in conversation with one of Koenig's French commanders. Later in 1942 after General Auchinleck had stopped Rommel's eastwards progression in the first battle of El Alamein, Gott was given command of Eighth Army but was killed in an air crash before taking up the post.
