Zoom Image

Two children (a girl and a boy who "smokes a pipe") are pictured in the former Castle Square in Cherbourg, which is now the Place de Gaulle. During the war, this square was named "Place Marshal Petain" and was renamed 'Place General de Gaulle "July 14, 1944. The clothes these children wear give an idea of the shortages endured by civilians during the occupation. The hem of her skirt, shoes and what appear to be homemade family wooden shoes.
