A British Matilda Infantry Tank in Gazala 1942: Photograph BHC 000226
Zoom Image

A Matilda Infantry tank of the type used by the British Army tank brigades during the Gazala battle. The Matilda was the heaviest and best protected tank on the battlefield having 78mm armour at its thickest point, a level of protection not matched by any of the Axis tanks. Its main weapon, however, was the 2pdr gun that proved to be dreadfully inadequate when facing German armour.
