British troops moving across the high mountains close to Cassino. The battlefield was a most inhospitable place: the rubble strewn landscape made all movement difficult, esecially during a night attack and the rocky ground made it impossible to dig in for protection. Shelters called sangars, had to be built by piling rocks on top of each other. Explosions caused by shell and mortar fire sent razor sharp fragments of rock slicing through anyone unlucky enough to be caught in the open
